Workshops and Classes

Along side one-on-one tutoring sessions, I also offer workshops for crafting that is not a long term learning curve. These workshops are great for individual learners, birthday parties, or siblings who want to do something fun and creative and walk away with a finished creation by the end of the class.

Discover Your Creative Side with Harps and Crafts

My Story and Services

Hey there, I'm Harper! I am a local artist who relocated to Asheville after graduating with my art degree. I created Harps and Crafts in hopes of inspiring creativity and fostering artistic growth among young artists. My passion for studio art stems from a childhood of encouragement and love to continue to learn new hobbies and trades.

As a child, I was gifted weekly sewing lessons with a lovely teacher. Most after school programs for children are either sport or instrument based. However, my lessons on the sewing machine taught me so much about practice within a craft, while also given the support and guidance as a learner. Harps and Crafts is my hope in creating this same love and confidence within art for other young creatives.

Along with a life of taking nannying, and caring for five of my own younger siblings, I graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2023 with a degree in studio art. I am well versed in several art forms, as wells as the patience and verbal clarity necessary to teach younger students. I previously worked at a crafting studio teaching up to 40 people within a single, 3 hour class.

My hopes for Harps and Crafts is to have consistent lessons with interested students to grow their confidence within their own creativity and chosen projects.

So What Does Art Tutoring Entail?

Creative Opportunities

The benefit of tutoring is consistency and familiarity. This service is an extension of child care, meaning parental supervision is not necessary. This is a great after school activity, or even a weekly time set for you as a parent to have a consistent bit of free time. I will come to you with the supplies needed for your child's chosen projects, spend time establishing skills and techniques, then leave the supplies for their personal use from then on. From there they can continue to work until my next visit where I can answer questions and continue to teach them more elements of their art. Just like a school tutor, but I hope they will enjoy it more!

Tutoring sessions can range from hour sessions, up to 4 hours. This is important for a lot of project that take more set up and clean up so learning time is not cut short.

Workshops length depend on projects, but will be longer in length than typical lessons.

Possible Projects

My hope is to bring to life whatever goal your child has, but here are some suggestions to get the ball rolling!

(Please note some of these will for older students only for safety reasons)

  • Crochet
  • Hand Sewing
  • Collage
  • Charcoal
  • Linocut Printmaking
  • Painting: watercolor, acrylic, oil
  • Jewelry Making
  • Paper mache
  • Figure drawing
  • Sculpting: Air-dry, oven bake or polymer clay
  • Wood Burning and Carving

Workshop Possibilities

Tutoring is never restricted to what they first picked! Art is fluid, that could mean taking a break to do a shorter task, or changing ideas entirely. Here are some fun classes that would not be long term, but still fun to learn!

  • Hand sewn or painted patches
  • Mini crochet projects
  • Stamp making
  • Dreamcatchers
  • Mini Sewing projects
  • Tie dye
  • Paper and clay beads
  • Soap and candle making
  • Macrame
  • Repurposed art using cool things like vinyl records or old mugs to make new decorations

Pricing

Tutoring pricing is entirely dependent on age, material cost, and lesson length. As this is a child care service, longer lessons and lessons for younger children who require more care than simply lessons change the pricing.

Some projects can require more investment in materials, but I will always discuss this before hand and try my best to only get what is most necessary.

I try to thrift and second hand source a lot of materials to give them another chance at life, that being said not all things can be found this way.

Base Pricing:

Children 10-14: $50 per hour

Teens 14-18: $40 per hour

(Group pricing would have to be discussed for proper estimate)
